So much to do in July, and only 31 days to do it in. Let's get started.

1. July 1: Opening reception, 4 p.m., Camden-Rockport Historical Society. This season's exhibit highlights area maritime industries in the last half of the 19th century. 2. Haven't you always admired someone else's rustic twig trellises and arbors? Learn how to make one yourself. 2 p.m. Vesper Hill Children's Chapel, Rockport. FMI 236-6199.

3. July 1: Belfast Summer Nights, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Steamboat Park. Listen to the harmony of six fiddles. Twin sisters Judy and Janet McMahon and daughters Anna & Maya French and Josie & Sophie Davis. Followed by The Brass Menagerie Brass Quintet. FMI 338-8448.

4. July 1: John Hiatt Plays Strom Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. At Camden Hills Regional High School in Rockport. Tickets are $35. FMI 626-5835.

5. July 1: Bay Chamber Concerts opening night. Caryl and Marvin Kolkin play Beethoven, Glick & Brahms. 8 p.m. Rockport Opera House. FMI 236-2823. Also, don't miss July 2: A Bay Chamber tribute to Duke Ellington. 8 p.m.

6. July 1+: "Grease" is the word in Camden, July 1 to July 3. Bring the family to this fun musical production put on by the Camden Civic Theatre in the beautiful--and historic--Camden Opera House. FMI 236-2281.

7. Did you know that "Grease" is one of the best-selling movie soundtracks of all time? Blow out the speakers in your rental car after finding the best music in Camden at Wild Rufus.

8. There are no drive-in restaurants around here. The closest thing is Knox County's Best of the Best Takeout Wagon, Scott's Place in Camden. Get a bacon double cheeseburger & fries & tell 'em VillageSoup sent you. They're right out front of Reny's off Route 1. The other two top takeout wagons are Wasses Hot Dogs and Sunfire Medican Grille in Rockland. Sunfire actually has taken the wheels off, and can be found on Lindsay Street.

9. Got something against takeout food? Visit the Belfast Area Farmer's Market, held each Friday, May through October, in downtown Belfast, at the lower end of Main Street, on the left as you head to the water. Vendors offer fresh veggies, produce, flowers, plants, cheese, poultry, lamb, honey and fruit and other seasonal specialties.

10. And there's another Farmer's Market Fridays in Rockland, at the public landing, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Note: The market will be closed on Aug 5 due to the Lobster Festival.

11. While we're on the subject, we should mention the Camden Farmer's Market, on Colcord Avenue, Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to noon. See the Tuva bakery man early for the some of the best sticky buns around.

12. OK. They also have great sticky buns at Hannibal's on the common in Union. Call 785-3663. Or, you can visit the Brown Bag or Atlantic Baking Co., both in Rockland, or the Market Basket and Sweet Sensations in Rockport. All received mention, for one food item or another, in the Knox County Best of the Best voting.

13. Now that you are all sugared up, get out and play. Indoors, there's a new semester at the Toy Library in Rockland starting July 1 at 9 a.m. (until noon). The Toy Library Center is for children 1 - 6 years old and their caregiver. Enjoy our newly renovated play space, make new friends, borrow from our extensive collection of toys, have fun. 14. Have you ever been to the Belfast City Park? It's off High Street. It is a fine public space with a lovely swimming pool open to the public. FMI: 338-3370, Belfast City Hall.

15. Luck be a lady...July 1, 2 and 3 at 8 p.m., "Guys and Dolls" at the Waldo Theatre. $15 for all seats except the balcony which is $13. Also $11 for children 12 and younger. FMI 832-6060.

16. July 2: At 6 p.m., join the Penobscot View Grange 388 on Route 1 in Rockport for a hot dog roast with music and dancing. Free potluck supper at 6 p.m. with meeting to follow at 7 p.m. FMI: Gladys Dodge, 594-8290.

17. July 2: Sunset Music Sail featuring Bob Stuart aboard the Bugeye Schooner Jenny Norman from 6 to 8 p.m., leaving from Harbor Park behind the new Grapes Restaurant. 18. How about a sail on the Kathryn B. moored in beautiful Belfast Harbor? FMI 763-4255 or www.kathrynb.com.

19. Who doesn't love a museum? The Davistown Museum in Liberty is open on Saturdays. FMI 288-5126 or www.davistownmuseum.org. The Belfast Historical Society Museum is open Fridays and Saturdays until Oct. 11. Historical exhibits highlighting Belfast shipbuilding, famous citizens and Percy Sanborn paintings. 20. The area's best-known July 4 celebration is being held July 3, and as usual, right in downtown Thomaston. 21. July 3: Need something a little more low-key? The Strawberry Festival & Church Fair in Lincolnville Center is for you. Parade 10 a.m. Lincolnville Band Concert 11 a.m. Strawberry shortcake & strawberry pie not to be missed, plus hot dogs & more. FMI 763-3381.

22. July 3: Head back to the future with the Fabulous '50s and '60s festival and antique plane show at the Owls Head Transportation Museum. This book could easily be called "101 Things To Do at the OHTM," so we'll tell you about this one, and refer you to www.owlshead.org or call 594-4418 for more information about other activities there this month.

23. Public suppers are open to everyone, whether you live here or are just visiting. They are a great way to connect with community. In Camden, the John Street United Methodist Church has a supper the first Saturday of the month. In July, that's the third, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. This is homemade cooking served family style, friendly, fast, and hot. The favorite feature of the evening is the pastor's weekly joke. Adults $6, Kids $3.

24. A community supper's got to be followed by a community dance. In Rockland, there's the Monthly Boogie Bash at the Lincoln Street Center, starting at 6:30 p.m. FMI Jill 542-6028 or Deb at 596-5688. Admission $6.

25. After a busy evening like that, you need a restful Sunday morning. Here's a suggestion: The Sunday brunch at Marcel's at the Samoset Resort. Great food, great atmosphere…and have you seen that view?

26. Whether you brunch at the Samoset or grab a breakfast sandwich someplace, walking the Rockland Breakwater is a must. July 3 and weekends throughout the summer, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friends of the Rockland Breakwater Light are holding open houses at the lighthouse at the end of the breakwater. 27. Also July 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., -- and every Saturday this month -- the flowers of Friendship Gardens at 117 Bradford Point in Friendship will benefit the homeless and unwanted animals in the care of the Humane Society of Knox County. Sales benefit the Humane Society will occur every Saturday in June and July from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. Bradford Point can be found easily off of Route 97 near the Hahn Community Center.

28. Sunday, July 4, 2004. Head to Brooks, for a traditional community fair celebrating the nation's birthday. The day starts with a five-mile run at 8 a.m.; the parade is at 10 a.m.

29. While you're in Waldo County, stop into Belfast. The Colonial Theatre is a great place to take in a film, and they have a great website: www.colonialtheatre.com. Next door is Darby's, a great place to have dinner. And there's Colburn's, the oldest shoe store anywhere, where they still measure your feet…How much time do you have?

30. Also in Belfast, the Game Loft is an adult-supervised community center whose program caters primarily to people ages 10 and up. It is open 362 days a year, from 2 to 8 p.m. on school days and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends and school vacations. FMI 338-6447 or www.gameloft.org.

31. Need more July 4 fun? In Camden, there's a street dance with local favorite Creatures of Habit, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Public Landing. Also, there's a BBQ and music on the Village Green sponsored by the Camden Rotary Club. Music by Stan Catell, Steelin' Thunder, Al Corey Swing Band. After this event, you're going to want to...

32. ...SING, SING, SING! The Windjammer Barbershop Chorus rehearses Monday nights, starting at 6 p.m., at the Lion's Den, Lions Lane in Camden. Men of all ages are welcome to come and check out Barbershop music. No experience necessary. FMI 845-3533 or 236-2159. For the ladies, the local women's barbershop chorus rehearses Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 156 Lakeview Dr., Rockland. 33. Lend a farm hand. Tuesday, July 6, Aldermere Farm begins its new Farm Hands program, geared for youth between the ages of 11 and 18, running to Aug. 12. Participants can choose to attend either Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 8 to 11 a.m. Supervised and guided by two Aldermere Farm interns and staff, groups of six children will learn how to handle and interact with young calves. 34. Don't miss Sounds of Downtown, the Rockland summer music series on the Farnsworth grounds. This is set for 5:30 p.m. every Wednesday through the end of August. No charge, though a hat will be passed for the bands. Enjoy the music, hit a gallery or two and find yourself some supper. What a nice evening. July 7: Rattlebox (blues/rock); July 14: Blind Albert Blues Band (blues/rock).

35. When in Rockland, don't forget to stop by the area's favorite store, Planet, just steps from the Farnsworth Art Museum. What can you buy for yourself within 50 yards of Planet? Great coffee, great jewelry and fashion, cool stuff for the house, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and art. Did we mention gifts, t-shirts, and great pens and art supplies?

36. Want to make your own art? Head to Rockport Blueprint on Main Street in Camden to find all the tools you need to paint the beautiful coast of Maine.

37. Attention parents of young daughters: The 10th Annual Avena's Fairy Tea Party is July 7. Join us for tea, cookies, fairy fun, and special puppet show. 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Avena Institute, Rockport. FMI 594-2403.

38. July 7: An art auction to benefit the Farnsworth Art Museum. Leading Maine artists represented in the Farnsworth Art Museum collection or who have recently been exhibited at the museum have contributed artworks to “Art Auction,” being held under a tent on the Farnsworth lawn Artists will donate either all or a portion of the sale of their works to the Farnsworth. Everyone is invited to attend. Tickets are $10 each. 6 p.m. Refreshments served, cash bar. FMI 596-6256.

39. July 8: Get your bridge on. At 6:30 p.m. the Camden Duplicate Bridge Club plays at the Anderson Inn at Quarry Hill in Camden. 40. July 8: Stock up for a rainy day: The 7th Annual Children's Book Sale and Party. Great used and new children's books and related items. Entertainment and refreshments for children up to age 13. Rockport Public Library, 1 Limerock St., Rockport. FMI 236-3642.

43. Go fishing. The Footbridge in Belfast is just the right place. A great view of the harbor out to the bay, peaceful and nice. Head down to the harbor, turn left just before the Weathervane Restaurant and watch for a parking area on the right (the water side) after the old sardine factory. 44. 46. July 10: Rockport Antiques & Art Show & Sale. Midcoast Recreation Center, Route 90, West Rockport. General admission, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., $6.

47. July 10/11: North Atlantic Blues Festival. Harbor Park, Rockland. More than 15 blues artists from throughout the U.S. and abroad. In downtown Rockland on Saturday night there will be a Blues "Club Crawl," with more than 15 clubs featuring blues bands. Ticket prices vary for one- and two-day passes, for adults & children. 48. July 11: 13th Annual Gardens in the Watershed Tour. Rockland, Thomaston, Spruce Head, Port Clyde. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. Sponsored by and to benefit the Georges River Land Trust. A gourmet bag lunch is available by pre-order. Tickets are $15 in advance: $18 on tour day. 49. July 13: Did you know that Maine has more Returned Peace Corps Volunteers than any other state (per capita)? Hear stories of Peace Corps life from area residents who have served overseas. Camden Public Library, 55 Main St., 6:30 p.m.

50. While you are at the library, be sure to walk over to the Camden Amphitheatre, one of the most peaceful places we know. Learn more about the history of the Amphitheatre, and its sister landscape, Harbor Park, from www.harborparks.org.

52. July 15. "What We Heard," music of past decades of Rockland. Presented on the front lawn of the Rockland Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Part of Rockland's Sesquicentennial celebration activities in 2004.

53. Be sure to stop by a VillageSoup office to get yourself a copy of our 150th special section. It celebrates all things Rockland. We think you'll agree, it's an appropriate tribute to our dear old Lime City.

54. Feeling the need for more history? How about a trip to one of the most unique lighthouse museums anywhere? The Shore Village Museum is where you want to be. Website: www.lighthouse.cc/shorevillage.

55. Need some opera in your life? The Maine Grand Opera has a number of events this summer, all presented from the stage at the Camden Opera House. Dates are July 20 and July 20, with additional events in August. Tickets may be purchased at Harbor Audio Video, Stitchery Square, ABCD Books or at the door. 56. July 15: 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camden Garden Club's 57th Annual House and Garden Tour Enjoy a wonderful day exploring seven various homes and garden sites in the Camden-Rockport area. From a historic estate and gardens on Rockport Harbor to one of the oldest farmsteads in Camden, there is something for all. This is one of the most popular garden tours on the coast, so be an early bird. $25 for all sites, $5 for each. For more info contact jtarbox@earthlink.net

57. After this tour, you're going to want to add some plant life or your life. Garden Centers abound in the Midcoast. Voted best of the best are the Green Thumb is Rockport; Plants Unlimited in Rockport and Hoboken Gardens, all in Rockport. The Thumb is on Route 17; Plants Unlimited and Hoboken Gardens are on Route 1.

58. Do you want to wear green instead of plant it? Try Reny's, the famous Maine department store, with locations on Route 1 in Camden and Route 3 in Belfast.

59. Want to buy green? Shop the Green Store, downtown Belfast. No food, but all kinds of other great, green, stuff for your household. This green isn’t the color, but the environmental sensibility of the goods. FMI: 338-4045. If you want to eat green in Belfast, head to Chase's Daily, just up Main Street from the Green Store, or over to the Belfast Co-op, around the corner on High Street.

60. July 16: An open house at the Island Institute in Rockland, celebrating the institute's 20th anniversary. From 3 to 6 p.m., at 386 Main St. Be sure to see the photo exhibit in the gallery and to stop by the Island Institute store, Archipelago, for great island-made goods.

61. July 16, 17, & 18: You went to the Rockport book sale, you have to go to this one, too. But get there early. This is the annual summer book sale at the Camden Public Library. No kidding, thousands of used, specialty, and rare books. Hours: Friday 3 to 5 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. FMI 236-3440.

62. July 17: In between trips to the book sale, power up at an old-Fashioned Open Pit Barbeque. 1/2 BBQ chicken, salads, cornbread, homemade pies. Benefits support for local ministries of the Church. 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The First Congregational Church UCC. 55 Elm St. Camden. 207-236-4821. Then come back for the Annual Church Fair. Antiques, beautiful hand knits, doll clothes, crafts, and items from around the world. Luncheon. July 23 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

63. Are you up for a scenic drive? Head to Appleton Ridge. Go west on Route 17 and turn right onto Route 131 at the Maritime Farms. Take a first left to head up to the Guinea Ridge Road, which eventually becomes the Appleton Ridge Road. Actually, just stop at the Maritime Farms and buy a map or ask directions. It's worth the drive. If you go all the way to the end of the Ridge Road, you'll come out on Route 131 in Searsmont. A little less than a mile on your left is the Fraternity Village Store. Stop in, gas up, grab a snack. The pizza's not bad, either.

64. While we're on the subject of cool things in Waldo County, take a trip to historic Winterport and experience the flavor of a locally owned winery and tasting room at the Winterport Winery.

65. July 17/18: 28th Annual Juried Arts & Crafts Show. This year, at three locations in Camden. More than 80 artists and craftspeople display and sell their work. Many people make their annual trip to Camden just for this event. FMI 236-4404 or www.camdenme.org.

66. July 17: St. George Days Arts and Crafts Fair. In conjunction with the annual Jackson Memorial Library Book Sale, with proceeds from rental space fees, going to that organization. Head down Route 131 off Route 1 in Thomaston.

67. It's always worth the trip to St. George, but since you're headed that way, go all the way to Port Clyde. Buy some lunch at the general store. Stop in at Stone Fish, a new, eclectic shop at the end of the peninsula.

68. July 17: Union Founders’ Day. This celebration marks the beginning of settlement in Union, which began 230 years ago. The committee has been making plans for a full day of activities for folks of all ages. Following the Pancake Breakfast at the People’s United Methodist Church and the Steppin’ Out Cloggers on the Common, there will be a Community Parade at 10:30 a.m. beginning at the Union Fire Station.

69. July 19: An old-fashioned bean supper at the Tranquility Grange in Lincolnville. This is one sure way to get a taste of Maine. FMI 763-3791.

70. July 20: Tuesday Musicales in the parish hall of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Chestnut Street, Camden. Tickets are $15 at the door. This time, the Best of Broadway, focusing on musical theater and particularly on "Carousel," the beloved musical that takes place in a small town on the Midcoast of Maine. 71. July 21/25: Belfast Bay Festival. An event that has been held for more than 55 years. It will be held at the Belfast City Park and includes food, music and activities for children. FMI 338-5719.

72. July 24: Lobster Ride to benefit the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. 15 to 100 miles. Meet 8 a.m. at Rockland District High School. FMI 623-4511 or www.bikemaine.orgwww.bikemaine.org

73. Rent a bike from Bikesenjava on Maverick Street in Rockland. Go for a ride, explore Rockland and afterwards enjoy a cup of the best coffee in town.

74. July 24: "The Daft and the Daring" at 7:30 p.m. at the Rockport Opera House. This is a dynamic evening of whimsical vignettes integrating physical theater, clown, mask, and movement by world-class performers Beverly Mann and Wolfe Bowart, a performance to benefit the Arts Center at Kingdom Falls in Montville.

75. Head for the Hills July 23, 24 & 25 for the Hope Bicentennial celebration, at Hope Corner, the intersections of routes 105 and 235. Variety show, parade, historical & artistic exhibits, original stories, antique vehicles, children's games, chicken BBQ, scenic walks and tours. 76. July 23: Gambling for the good of the community The American Red Cross In Eastern Maine is hosting its first annual Monte Carlo, silent & live auction evening at the Samoset Resort.

77. July 24: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Harbor Park in Camden, is home to the annual Teen Arts Festival. The talent will amaze. FMI 230-0866

78. July 24/25 Fifteenth Annual Full Circle Summer Fair in Blue Hill. Worth the trip. It all starts Saturday at 2 p.m. with an introduction to contra dancing, followed at 2:30 by a contra dance. There's a lot, lot more to this festival, Featured headliners Devonsquare and Christine Lavin and Louise Taylor and David Mallet. FMI, www.WERU.org.

79. July 24: Celebrate Henry Knox's birthday. 10 a.m., graveside services; 11 a.m., open house at the Thomaston Historical Society; noon, program at Montpelier, the Knox mansion on Route 1 in Thomaston. Who was Henry Knox, you ask? Only a very smart man, the namesake of Knox County and General George Washington's secretary of war. FMI www.generalknoxmuseum.org

80. July 24: Mid Coast Christian Music Festival at the Warren Community School. Bands include: Nealley's Corner, Tha Holy Ghost Guerillas ,Mac Economy and Exchange & special speaker Rob McGowan. 81. Goose River & Sandbaggers Grill: Nine 'n Dine, Thursday night dinner and nine holes of golf at Goose River Golf Course.

82. Through Aug. 28: A juried exhibition of work by Center for Furniture Craftsmanship alumni in the school's Messler Gallery. This is the first such exhibit in the school's 12-year history. More than 1,500 former students were eligible to participate. CFFC is off Route 90 in West Rockport. FMI: www.woodschool.org

83. July 25: Open Farm Day. Learn more about agriculture and small business in Knox and Waldo counties. For a list of participating farms, click over to the state's website, www.getrealmaine.com.

85. July 28: Join the Active Older Adult Group for lunch at the Waldo County YMCA. We gather for a lunch every last Wednesday of each month. The lunch is free. Everyone over 60 years old is considered an Active Older Adult at the Waldo County YMCA and we encourage everyone to bring a guest of any age. FMI, www.waldocountyymca.com

86. Who doesn’t want their own pond? July 30 in Warren, you can learn how to build your own, thanks to the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District. From 1 to 4 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Union Town office building. Parking and entrance is behind of the building, ground floor. Drive to the right and behind the Fire Department. Instruction includes pond planning, design, construction and maintenance. Pre-registration is required. 87. July 31: Friendship Day. Activities all day including a parade, benefit auction for Friendship ambulance service, chicken BBQ (evening), children's activities. FMI 354-0622 or 832-6828.
