Raising Awareness and Money to Fight Cancer
The 2004 Relay For Life, held June 4-5 at Camden Hills Regional High School, was a tremendous success.
With 20 teams and about 350 volunteers participating, the 2004 Relay raised nearly $40,000, more than double the previous year's results, in only its second year in Rockport. This year six teams were youth teams.
The survivors' lap took place at 6pm to kick off the Relay under beautifully clear skies. Survivors and their caregivers walked a lap around the CHRHS track carrying a banner with the handprints of local survivors.
One of the highlights of the event came at 10pm, when 999 luminarias were lit and placed around the high school track. Each luminaria featured the name a survivor or victim of cancer.
The theme of this year's event was Hollywood, which was celebrated with themed costumes each hour, and themed campsites. Awards were given to the best decorated camp site and the best costumes. Movies were shown outdoors on a big screen all night to keep the walkers motivated.
